Two Teachers Accepted to Columbia University's Teachers College
Second grade teacher, Kelly Risdon, and sixth grade teacher, Brandi Akerstrom, will be attending Columbia University's prestigious Teachers College Reading and Writing Project this summer.
The number of applicants for the program far outweighs the spaces available and teachers are selected through an application process that takes into account their demonstrated commitment to teaching reading and writing and their school's commitment to professional development.
This institute is designed for educators, classroom teachers, school administrators, and curriculum specialists who are committed to turning classrooms into richly literate reading and writing workshops.
The list of speakers and session leaders include top educators: Carl Anderson, Katherine Bomer, Lucy Calkins, Christopher Paul Curtis, Mary Ehrenworth, Amanda Hartman, and Christine Holley.
"We are so excited for this opportunity to learn from the country's best writing teachers," said Risdon and Akerstrom. "We will be bringing back many teaching methods, literature, and classroom structures to support the students at St. Mark's and help develop their writing skills."
