First grade students celebrated the culmination of their shoe collection by donating 941 pairs of shoes to Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world.
The students solicited donations for the past month from their peers and during the school's Ortega River Run event. To encourage participation, the students created posters and gave presentations during chapel services.
Math skills were used during this service project as they collected, sorted, bundled and packaged the shoes for delivery to Soles4Souls.
The true benefit to the students was their understanding of the purpose of this project. According to first grader Wilson L., "It made me feel happy to to help collect shoes to give to others so they don't hurt their feet."
The students also learned about many of the places where the shoes will be distributed. "Some of the shoes we are collecting are going to children in Haiti so they don't have to walk to school barefoot," said first grader, Jayda B.
Fr. Mark joined the students throughout the project. During the final send-off celebration he led the students in prayer, blessing the shoes and the recipients.
Thank you to all the first grade parents who assisted with the project and helped deliver the shoes to the Soles4Souls Jacksonville warehouse.
