Students creating “can” art to support those in need.
Fourth through sixth grade students participating in the Art for Service elective class every Tuesday have been working with local artists from the Jacksonville Artist Guild (JAG) to create a project to raise money and awareness for St. Mary’s Parish in Downtown Jacksonville. St. Mary’s mission is to serve the under-served in our city with food, clothing, and spiritual sanctuary.
The students were visited by Carole Mehrtens and Pam Steeg, of JAG, during a recent art class. The guest artists taught the students water color techniques which the students then used to create new labels for cans of food.
These cans of pears, pineapple, tomatoes, carrots, and more will be auctioned off following a special chapel service on Friday, November 6. Money raised will go to St. Mary’s in conjunction with the St. Mark’s Church’s “Biggest Food Drive Ever” held to collect donations of non-perishable food.
