Second Grade
Second grade at St. Mark’s is action packed. New discoveries will be made while reinforcing and expanding skills taught in first grade.
Language Arts Continuing with the Houghton Mifflin reading curriculum, students will compare fiction and nonfiction selections, review theme skills and strategies from first grade, learn test-taking skills, and focus on genre studies of fables, biography, poetry, and chapter books. Second graders are assessed regularly by the STAR tests and enjoy reading Accelerated Reader books. Second graders learn the fundamentals of the writing process and practice them through book reports, research cards, stories, and creative writing. Handwriting continues with Handwriting Without Tears as students become more confident.
Math: Students will have a great time with Singapore Math as they experience a deeper understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. Students will subtract with and without renaming to the thousands place. Daily word problems continue to be an integral part of their math day. Money, measurement (including metrics), fractions time, graphs, and basic geometry are all part of the second grade’s exciting program. Second graders love the integration of technology in math as they utilize computer programs that increase math fluency in basic number bonds.
Hands-on science lessons with the science teacher, in the fully equipped lab, focus on light and sound, fossils, weather, and climates.
In social studies, students explore ways that we must all learn to interact with others responsibly and peacefully in the world. They also research a broad study of various cultures and information about the founding of America, and the importance of Native Americans.
Spanish: In addition to the language and cultural exposure, students continue the study of spelling and vocabulary of the Spanish language by a native speaker. Students hear the language in everyday usage and activities.
Service Learning: Click here to learn about the special service learning projects in second grade.
Second graders attend all the resources; art, computer, Christian education, music, physical education, and library throughout the week.
